Our Yirgalem center is the busiest and most successful of our five outreach centers. This is in large part thanks to Dr. Biniyam Sirak. The thirty-six-year-old completed medical school and his specialization training at one of Ethiopia’s most renowned universities. He now works as a specialist of gynecology at the Yirgalem government hospital and works part-time at our center.
After his specialty training in obstetric fistula with Dr. Fekade and his team at our main hospital, he was hired as a part-time surgeon at the Yirgalem hospital in 2016. Since then he has been caring for women suffering from obstetric fistulas in Southern Ethiopia. His patients describe him as friendly and easy going, while remaining professional, as well as providing his patients with renewed dignity. Dr. Biniyam has already performed over 300 successful fistula repair surgeries in his time with us. He also performs C-sections for women who return to the hospital for safe deliveries following fistula repair.
In his personal life, Dr. Biniyan is married and he and his wife are expecting their first child. He has this to say about his work and inspiration:
