In Sub-Saharan Africa, millions of women face life-threatening risks during pregnancy and childbirth. For many, the nearest health facility is a two-day walk away, contributing to a staggering 1 in 16 chance of dying from pregnancy or childbirth complications. In this reality, childbirth injuries such as obstetric fistula are far too common.
When prolonged, obstructed labor occurs without access to a C-section, women may spend days in labor—often resulting in stillbirth. The physical toll is devastating. Internal injuries leave grieving mothers leaking urine or feces uncontrollably. Rejected by their communities, many are forced into isolation and despair.
Yet these outcomes are both preventable and treatable.
