Dedicated to the health and wellbeing of mothers and babies through holistic care, prevention and treatment of childbirth injuries.
The rate of maternal, newborn and child mortality in Sub-Saharan Africa is staggering. For every maternal death there are over 20 morbidities, the most devastating being obstetric fistula. These injuries destroy women’s dignity, rob them of their health and strength, and drain them emotionally. The smell of constantly leaking urine alienates them from their families and communities.
Our guiding beliefs
No woman or girl should suffer the indignity of fistula. By focusing on protocols of excellence—holistic treatment, prevention and breakthrough care—our cherished partners on the ground are restoring lives and helping mothers deliver, with no childbirth injuries, healthy babies. At the center of our work are the beliefs that:
- Sustainable change must come from within. Our partners—exceptional local leaders with vision, determination and grit—are using valuable resources to build physical and human capital.
- All women and girls suffering with fistulas deserve the best repair surgery possible and opportunities to reenter their families and communities with pride.
- Childbirth injuries are best eliminated by focusing on prevention.
- Preventing injuries means mothers deliver healthy babies and avoid complications.
- By building capacity, with local partners at the helm, our work is effective and lasting.
Maternal Health Fund builds and supports women’s clinics and hospitals enabling safe childbirths. Much of our work is in Sub-Saharan Africa because these countries lack well-established women’s healthcare.
